activities

The Brisbane Bushwalkers Club offers a wide range of activities for member's enjoyment.

These fall into several categories:

The main club activities are day walks, day-night walks, through walks and base camps. These are supplemented by other activities, which include rogaining, kayaking, navigation training, photography, birdwatching, cycling and some social activities

At present white water rafting events are not being conducted by the club as club activities due to insurance constraints.

The Club's goal is to have on its programme at least two Day Walks each day of the weekend as well as at least one Through Walk and one Base Camp. The Club attempts to ensure that there is at least one walk on each day of the weekend suitable for beginners, to allow new members to ease their way into bush walking. The easier walks are a good example of what is on offer and gives new bushwalkers an idea of the grading system.

The Club encourages its members to attain and improve skills associated with bushwalking and leadership. Areas of development include first aid; full members who attain their first aid certificate are refunded 50% of the cost on certification. It conducts navigation days at least three times per year to assist in improving skills in navigation.

DAY WALKS

Vary in degree of difficulty from easy to medium to hard (see gradings section). The majority of these walks depart on a Saturday or Sunday morning and return late in the day, with a stop for coffee on the way home. These locations are usually not more than 1-2 hours by vehicle from Brisbane. Mid week walks are offered as well, these walks being very popular with shift workers.

DAY - NIGHT WALKS

Commence during the afternoon on a Saturday and usually encompass the Saturday night on the rise of the full moon, finishing with a barbeque around 11pm.

BASE CAMPS

Set up on a Friday night are another feature of the Club's activities. Saturday involves walking out on an extensive day walk, returning to the base camp at night. Sunday usually consists of a shorter walk prior to returning to Brisbane Sunday afternoon/evening. Base camps are not as difficult as through walks, because you usually camp near your transport and only walk with a day pack. The campers must take all food and utensils. However, as you are close to your transport, you are able to take some extra luxuries.

THROUGH WALKS

Begin on Friday night and finish on Sunday afternoon/evening. The walker must carry all their gear for camping out overnight, sometimes including water for the weekend. These walks are regarded as the ultimate in walking, as you are able to visit more remote areas not able to be accessed by road and therefore considered more interesting and sometimes challenging. In contrast there are some fairly easy through walks, which are, for the most part on tracks, yet still giving the impression of being somewhere fairly remote, interesting and away from civilisation.

TRAINING

The Club holds a number of training days, which cover, leader's training camps, abseiling, navigation, map and compass reading. Full members attaining first aid certification will receive 50% refund upon attainment of certificate. The Club has a "mentoring system", whereby potential leaders are teamed with an experienced leader, who will guide them through the procedures of organising their first walks. It has a buddy system as well, which allows potential leaders to lead their first walks with an experienced leader accompanying them until the new leader feels comfortable leading solo.

ROGAINING

The Club holds at least one rogaine day during the year. Rogaining is a team sport, focussing on finding check points, from maps supplied, within a certain area, in a set time frame, following specific rules. The harder the check point is to find the higher the point value. The winner is the Team with the highest score. These activities support Queensland Rogaine Association events and BBW encourages all members to participate in the QRA days. This activity will build on the skills of map reading and navigation.

KAYAKING/CANOEING

There are several very active groups who organise kayaking and canoeing trips for members interested in this activity. These activities range from a single day out on the water somewhere, to base camps that will run over the entire weekend, or part of the weekend. There are many options to choose from.

PHOTOGRAPHIC

Several keen photographers reside within the ranks of the club and these enthusiasts organise photographic walks. These walks are very leisurely and are generally to a spot that is very easy to walk into. Plenty of time is allowed for walkers to take spectacular photographic shots. The Club also has an annual photographic competition judged in September of each year, with prizes awarded in the categories of Nature, Club Character and Landscape. The cover photograph for the club's monthly newsletter is chosen from club members' photographs.

BIRDWATCHING

Birdwatching weekends are another activity, organised by a few of the keen bird watchers (feathered variety) within the club's members. These weekends are generally a weekend base camp at a spot renowned for prolific bird life. Birding weekends consist mainly of early morning and late afternoon walking trips to spot the birds when they are most active.

SOCIAL

There are several different social activities organised each month within the Club. These activities include a dinner and movie night, organising and participating in the suppers at the Club meetings every two weeks, theatre nights, weekends away, sailing, or trips to the art gallery, followed by coffee. There are at least two groups engaged in indoor rock climbing nights at different venues, on both sides of the Brisbane River. The Club publishes a monthly newsletter and there is the opportunity to become an active participant within the group involved in the collating and mailing each month. Involvement in the committee is always welcome if you are interested in expanding your interests. Opportunities for self-development abound and of course the Club benefits from the increased participation.
